What's Happening?
The UK Modern Slavery & Exploitation Helpline, operated by the charity Unseen, has reported a significant increase in suspected modern slavery cases within the construction sector. In 2025, the helpline received 150 reports, marking a 44% rise from the previous
year. The number of potential victims identified rose to 710, up from 492 in 2024. The construction industry now leads in the number of suspected victims, surpassing even the care sector. Unseen attributes this rise to the exploitation of skilled worker visas, where workers are often tied to a single employer, making them vulnerable to abuse. The charity highlights the need for stronger safeguards and oversight to protect migrant workers from exploitation.
Why It's Important?
The increase in suspected modern slavery cases in the construction sector underscores systemic issues within the industry, particularly concerning the exploitation of migrant workers. This situation highlights significant gaps in worker protections and the need for robust enforcement mechanisms. The reliance on cheap migrant labor, coupled with labor shortages, exacerbates the risk of exploitation. Addressing these issues is crucial for ensuring fair labor practices and protecting vulnerable workers. The findings call for urgent action from policymakers and industry leaders to implement stronger regulations and oversight to prevent such abuses.
