What's Happening?
The 'Future Makers Programme,' a joint initiative of the SustainEd University Coalition and the United Nations Resident Coordinator’s Office in North Macedonia, is actively engaging university students in sustainable development. This program brings together
20 students from eight universities to volunteer their time, ideas, and skills to advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the country. Through idea design, volunteering, consultations, campaigns, and capacity-building activities, participants gain practical experience and strengthen the role of young people in shaping their communities. The program facilitates interaction between young people and relevant institutions, private sector stakeholders, and UN entities. Current active groups are working on diverse projects, including a Climate Action Group developing a digital map for textile recycling, an Education Group exploring improved library facilities, a Health Group addressing student health risks, a Gender Equality Group focusing on women's inheritance rights, and a Social Cohesion and Inclusion Group mapping accessibility barriers in Skopje.
Why It's Important?
This initiative is important as it demonstrates a tangible approach to youth engagement in addressing critical societal and environmental challenges, a model that could be replicated or inspire similar programs in the U.S. and globally. By empowering young people with practical skills and connecting them with stakeholders, the program fosters a new generation of leaders equipped to tackle complex issues. For the U.S., understanding such initiatives can inform strategies for youth development, civic engagement, and sustainable policy-making. The focus on SDGs like responsible consumption, quality education, good health, gender equality, and reduced inequalities aligns with broader international development agendas, potentially influencing U.S. foreign aid and partnership priorities in developing nations. The program's success in North Macedonia could serve as a case study for effective community-led development.
What's Next?
The SustainEd Future Makers Programme is envisioned as a recurring initiative, with plans for a new call for student applications in the fall of 2026. The program aims to expand beyond university students to include high school students and other young people, connecting them with municipalities, youth centers, and high schools. This expansion suggests a long-term commitment to fostering youth leadership and community engagement in North Macedonia. The findings and recommendations from the various student groups, such as the health survey data or the accessibility map, are expected to inform future policies and interventions by local institutions and partners. The program's continued growth and impact could lead to more widespread adoption of youth-led sustainable development projects across the region.
Beyond the Headlines
The 'Future Makers Programme' highlights a crucial shift in development paradigms, recognizing young people not just as beneficiaries but as active agents of change. This approach challenges traditional top-down development models by empowering local communities and fostering grassroots innovation. Ethically, it underscores the importance of intergenerational equity and the right of young people to participate in decisions that affect their future. Culturally, it promotes a sense of civic responsibility and collective action among youth, potentially leading to a more engaged and resilient society. The program also serves as a powerful example of how educational institutions, civil society, and international organizations can collaborate to create meaningful impact, fostering a culture of sustainability and social justice from the ground up.
