New research, co-authored by senior author and gastroenterologist Andrew T. Chan from Massachusetts General Hospital, has established a link between the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages and an increased risk of gastric cancer in a U.S. population.
Published in Gastro Hep Advances, the analysis found that individuals who consumed at least one sugar-sweetened beverage daily were approximately 2.45 times more likely to develop stomach cancer compared to those who never drank such beverages. This study is significant as it is the first to demonstrate this association within a U.S. demographic. The research utilized data from over 112,000 participants in two large studies, the Nurses' Health Study and Health Professionals Follow-Up Study, spanning from 1986 to 2022, during which 278 cases of gastric cancer were documented. The elevated risk was observed in both men and women, with women showing a roughly threefold increased risk and men a twofold increased risk.
