An international research team, the Revived Genomics of Personality Consortium, has identified over 1,200 genetic variants associated with the 'Big Five' personality traits: openness to experience, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism.
The study, which combined data from 46 research cohorts globally, involved participants providing DNA samples and completing questionnaires designed to measure these traits. Researchers then compared genetic data with personality scores to pinpoint associated genetic variants. While no single 'personality gene' exists, the study found that personality traits are influenced by numerous genetic variants, each with a very small individual effect. However, the combined impact of these variants is substantial and consistent across diverse populations. For instance, genetic variants linked to extraversion in a young Dutch adult could also predict extraversion in an older American adult. The research also utilized methods comparing relatives to confirm that these genetic associations are not solely attributable to shared environmental upbringing, though environmental factors still play a crucial role in personality development.
