What's Happening?
Neil Haggath, a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and an amateur astronomer, is set to present a collection of unusual stories from the history of astronomy. The event, titled 'You Couldn't Make It Up,' will take place on November 20, 2025, and will be available
both in-person and online. Haggath, who has a background in physics and astrophysics, will share tales such as 'The Planet That Wasn't' and 'The Unluckiest Astronomer Who Ever Lived.' His lifelong interest in spaceflight and astronomy, sparked by the early Space Race and Apollo program, has led him to become a veteran of six total eclipse expeditions.
Why It's Important?
This event highlights the intriguing and often overlooked stories within the field of astronomy, offering both enthusiasts and the general public a chance to engage with the subject in a unique way. By sharing these stories, Haggath aims to inspire a deeper interest in astronomy and space exploration. The event also serves as a platform for fostering community among amateur astronomers and those interested in the history of science. Such gatherings can stimulate public interest in scientific fields, potentially encouraging future generations to pursue careers in STEM.
