Finland's defense company Patria has introduced a new light tracked armored personnel carrier named Trackx at the DSEI UK defense show in London. This vehicle is designed to succeed the M113, a historically significant armored vehicle with over six decades of operational use. Trackx is set to be ready for serial production by 2027 and aims to fill a market gap between lighter and heavier armored vehicles. It can transport up to 12 soldiers, including a driver, commander, and ten dismounts. The vehicle is marketed as a contemporary alternative in the 13-18 metric-ton category, offering a lighter, cost-effective solution for all-terrain troop mobility. Patria's executive vice president, Jussi Järvinen, highlighted the lack of comparable vehicles in the market, noting that competitors focus on either lighter or significantly heavier options.

The introduction of Trackx is significant for European forces seeking modern replacements for older models like the M113 or MT-LB. The M113 is one of the most widely used combat vehicles globally, with over 80,000 units produced. Trackx offers ballistic protection against small-arms fire and can be upgraded for defense against armor-piercing rounds. The vehicle has undergone extensive testing in diverse environments, ensuring its adaptability. Interest from potential customers within the EU and beyond indicates a strong demand for such modern armored solutions. The development of Trackx is part of the EU-funded FAMOUS program, aimed at future high-mobility armor, with Finland leading the initiative.

Patria plans to leverage its expertise in establishing armored vehicle manufacturing programs in various countries, emphasizing local production based on customer needs. The company is collaborating with defense firms like Arquus, KNDS, and Indra within the FAMOUS consortium. The program has a budget of approximately €132 million, funded by the European Commission, European Defence Fund, and member nations. Patria also serves as the lead designer for the Common Armoured Vehicle System, based on its Patria 6x6 wheeled platform, with production in Finland and Latvia and plans for local manufacturing in Germany.
