Researchers at the University of Maryland, led by Associate Professor Brantley Hall, have developed smart underwear designed to track human flatulence. This innovative wearable technology aims to provide new insights into digestive health and the gut
microbiome. The device, a small disc that snaps into the back of underwear, uses tiny electrochemical sensors to detect hydrogen, a gas produced during the fermentation of carbohydrates by gut microbes. The data collected contributes to the Human Flatus Atlas, a research project that involves participants worldwide documenting their meals and wearing the device. The project seeks to understand how microbes respond to different foods and why some individuals tolerate high-fiber diets better than others. The first study, published in Biosensors and Bioelectronics, found an average of 32 farts over a 12-hour period. A second, larger study with over 500 volunteers is underway, with participants wearing the device for extended periods.
