A remarkably well-preserved molar from a Pacific mastodon, an extinct species of prehistoric elephant, was recently discovered in a San Mateo County creek by geomorphologist Brigid Lynch. The tooth, described as being in 'immaculate condition' and the
size of a toaster, is considered one of the most complete mastodon molars ever found in the Bay Area. Pacific mastodons, which weighed up to 13,000 pounds and stood 9 feet tall, roamed western North America from over 2.5 million years ago until about 11,000 years ago. The discovery was made while Lynch was conducting field surveys for a habitat enhancement project for the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District. The fossil has since been donated to Stanford University's Doerr School of Sustainability, where researchers plan to conduct carbon dating and other analyses to determine its exact age, the mastodon's diet, and past climate conditions.
