Recent research has highlighted that mosquitoes are attracted to humans based on the chemistry of their skin, rather than the commonly believed 'sweet blood'. The study, conducted by researchers at Rockefeller University, found that carboxylic acids produced
by the skin play a significant role in attracting mosquitoes. These acids are influenced by both genetic factors and the skin's microbiome. The research identified that individuals who are more attractive to mosquitoes, termed 'mosquito magnets', can be up to a hundred times more appealing than those who are less bitten. Despite this, the study suggests that using an EPA-registered repellent containing DEET or picaridin can effectively reduce mosquito bites. Additionally, avoiding floral and fruity fragrances in soaps and lotions, which mimic plant scents that attract mosquitoes, can also help.
