What's Happening?
The USDA has announced the details of Stage Two of the Supplemental Disaster Relief Program (SDRP), which includes $16 billion in total assistance for farmers affected by natural disasters in 2023 and 2024. This stage covers eligible crop, tree, bush,
and vine losses not covered under Stage One, including non-indemnified, uncovered, and quality losses. Livestock, timber, and crops for grazing are not eligible. The enrollment period for Stage Two opens on November 24, 2025, and closes on April 30, 2026. Additionally, the Milk Loss Program provides up to $1.65 million in payments to eligible dairy operations for milk lost due to disasters.
Why It's Important?
This announcement is crucial for farmers who have suffered significant losses due to natural disasters, providing them with financial relief to recover and sustain their operations. The program aims to stabilize the agricultural sector, which is vital for the U.S. economy and food security. By offering targeted assistance, the USDA helps ensure that farmers can continue to produce essential crops and maintain their livelihoods. The relief also supports rural communities that depend on agriculture as a primary economic driver.
What's Next?
Farmers eligible for Stage Two of the SDRP can begin enrolling on November 24, 2025. The USDA will continue to provide updates and guidance on the application process. Stakeholders, including state agricultural departments and farmer associations, are expected to assist farmers in navigating the enrollment process. The USDA may also monitor the effectiveness of the relief programs and make adjustments as necessary to address any emerging needs.
