What's Happening?
In 2025, Uruguay handled a total of 6.654 million tonnes of iron ore from LHG Mining, with shipments processed through the Navios South American Logistics terminal in Nueva Palmira and the Punta del Arenal transshipment area along the Uruguay River. The
iron ore originated from the Corumbá region in Brazil's Mato Grosso do Sul state, a significant iron ore-producing area. Of the total volume, 3.98 million tonnes were shipped overseas directly from Nueva Palmira, while 2.674 million tonnes were transshipped at Punta del Arenal. The majority of the cargo was destined for Asia, particularly China, with the remainder going to Europe.
Why It's Important?
The handling of such a large volume of iron ore underscores Uruguay's strategic role in the global iron ore supply chain, particularly in facilitating exports to Asia and Europe. This operation highlights the importance of the Navios terminal and Punta del Arenal as key logistics hubs in the region. The increase in projected volumes for the current year, expected to reach 8.6 million tonnes, indicates a growing demand for iron ore and suggests potential economic benefits for Uruguay, including increased revenue and job creation in the logistics and mining sectors.
What's Next?
With projected volumes set to increase by 33% in the current year, Uruguay may need to enhance its logistics infrastructure to accommodate the growing demand. This could involve investments in port facilities and transportation networks to ensure efficient handling and shipment of iron ore. Additionally, the country might explore opportunities to expand its role in the global iron ore market, potentially attracting more international mining companies to utilize its logistics capabilities.
