What's Happening?
Katherine Locke has been named the new president of Authors Against Book Bans (AABB), taking over from Maggie Tokuda-Hall. Locke, known for her children's books such as 'The Girl with the Red Balloon' and 'What Are Your Words? A Book About Pronouns,'
brings over 14 years of experience in nonprofit advocacy to the role. The organization focuses on opposing censorship and promoting freedom of expression in literature. Alongside Locke's appointment, Shaneé Yvette Willis has been hired as the first program and operations manager for AABB, indicating a strategic expansion of the organization's leadership and operational capacity.
Why It's Important?
The appointment of Katherine Locke as president of AABB is significant in the ongoing battle against book bans, which have been a contentious issue in the U.S. The organization plays a crucial role in advocating for authors' rights and ensuring diverse voices are heard in literature. Locke's leadership is expected to strengthen AABB's efforts in combating censorship, which has implications for educational freedom and the availability of diverse perspectives in schools and libraries. This move could influence public policy and societal attitudes towards censorship and freedom of expression.
