The Jerry and Susan Rice Foreign Language Scholarship Fund has been established through the Blue River Community Foundation to support Shelbyville High School (SHS) graduates pursuing foreign language studies in college. The fund, which aims to provide
scholarships for students planning to study Spanish or other foreign languages, has already surpassed its initial goal of $25,000, reaching $35,000. This initiative honors Jerry Rice, a Spanish teacher at SHS from 1977 to 2005, who was also inducted as the inaugural member of the district’s Educator Hall of Fame. The idea for the Hall of Fame and the scholarship fund originated from former students of Rice, Curt Johnson and Tyler Brant, who initially proposed naming Rice's former classroom in his honor. The district expanded this concept into a permanent Hall of Fame to recognize educators who have significantly impacted Shelbyville students and schools. Jerry Rice, unable to attend the ceremony due to health concerns, provided a video recounting his journey to Shelbyville and his positive experiences teaching there.
