What's Happening?
Somalia's Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation has launched a national agriculture sector coordination platform in Mogadishu. This initiative aims to improve collaboration among government institutions, international partners, and development agencies
to enhance food security. The platform seeks to streamline agricultural programs and support Somali farmers in increasing productivity amid challenges such as drought and climate variability. The launch event was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Saleh Ahmed Jama, senior government officials, and representatives from international organizations like the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Food Programme.
Why It's Important?
The establishment of this coordination platform is a significant step towards achieving food self-sufficiency in Somalia. By aligning development efforts and promoting sustainable agricultural growth, the initiative addresses critical challenges faced by the country's agriculture sector, which is vital for the economy and employs a majority of the population. The platform's focus on improving productivity and resilience is essential for mitigating the impacts of recurring droughts and climate variability, ultimately contributing to economic stability and improved livelihoods for Somali citizens.
