What's Happening?
The Lincoln Police Department has initiated a high-visibility seat belt enforcement project, running from November 5 through November 30. This initiative is part of the national “Make It Click” campaign, aiming to increase seat belt usage and reduce traffic
fatalities. Officers will concentrate their enforcement efforts during periods when seat belt use is typically lower, such as evenings, weekends, and the Thanksgiving holiday period. The primary goal is to raise awareness and encourage safer driving habits rather than solely issuing citations. This project is financially supported by grant funding from the Nebraska Department of Transportation’s Highway Safety Office. Data from the 2025 Nebraska Seat Belt Use Survey indicates that only 81.7% of drivers and passengers in Nebraska wear seat belts, which is below the national average of 91.3%. In 2025, Nebraska recorded 236 traffic fatalities, with 70 of those individuals not wearing seat belts.
Why It's Important?
This enforcement project is crucial for public safety in Lincoln and across Nebraska, addressing a significant public health concern related to traffic fatalities. The lower-than-national seat belt usage rate in Nebraska highlights a persistent risk factor on the state's roads. By increasing visibility and enforcement, the Lincoln Police Department aims to alter driver and passenger behavior, potentially preventing serious injuries and deaths. The focus on high-risk periods like evenings, weekends, and holidays is strategic, as these times often see increased traffic and a higher incidence of impaired or distracted driving, compounding the risks associated with not wearing a seat belt. The grant funding from the Nebraska Department of Transportation underscores the state's commitment to improving road safety and reducing the economic and social costs associated with traffic accidents.
What's Next?
The enforcement project will continue through November 30, with increased police presence and seat belt checks expected throughout Lincoln. Following the conclusion of the campaign, authorities will likely evaluate its effectiveness by analyzing changes in seat belt usage rates and traffic accident data during the enforcement period. The Nebraska Department of Transportation’s Highway Safety Office will continue to monitor statewide seat belt compliance and may implement further initiatives based on the outcomes of this project and ongoing safety assessments. Public awareness campaigns are also expected to continue, reinforcing the importance of seat belt use beyond the enforcement period. The long-term goal is to achieve a sustained increase in seat belt compliance, aligning Nebraska more closely with national safety standards.
Beyond the Headlines
Beyond the immediate goal of reducing traffic fatalities, this initiative touches upon broader societal implications regarding public health and individual responsibility. The persistent gap between Nebraska's seat belt usage and the national average suggests a need for deeper community engagement and education on the benefits of seat belts. This enforcement project could also spark discussions about the efficacy of high-visibility campaigns versus continuous educational efforts in fostering long-term behavioral change. Furthermore, the data on traffic fatalities involving unbuckled individuals highlights the preventable nature of many road deaths, prompting a re-evaluation of public safety messaging and strategies to encourage compliance with existing laws. The success of such campaigns often relies on a combination of enforcement, education, and community buy-in to create a culture of safety on the roads.
