Two international Phase III clinical trials have demonstrated that upadacitinib, a medication typically used for rheumatoid arthritis, is effective in promoting hair regrowth in individuals suffering from alopecia areata. Alopecia areata is an autoimmune
disease where the immune system attacks hair follicles, leading to hair loss. The trials, UP-AA1 and UP-AA2, involved 1,399 participants, including adolescents aged 12 to 17 and adults up to 64, all with at least 50% scalp hair loss. Participants were randomly assigned to receive either a 15 mg daily dose of upadacitinib, a 30 mg daily dose, or a placebo. The results, published in JAMA Dermatology, indicated that nearly half of those on the 15 mg dose achieved 80% or more scalp-hair coverage within 24 weeks, while over 54% on the 30 mg dose reached this milestone. In contrast, only about 2% of the placebo group experienced similar regrowth. Beyond scalp hair, patients also reported improvements in eyebrow and eyelash regrowth, alongside enhanced emotional and social well-being.
