What's Happening?
Providence Health & Services has conducted a service evaluation focusing on denture-related documentation for inpatients, particularly in wards dealing with older patients. The evaluation aimed to assess
practices related to oral and denture care, advise on methods to prevent denture loss, and educate healthcare professionals about the importance of oral hygiene. Data collection was conducted at Crawley Hospital across three inpatient wards, involving 67 inpatients. The study found varying levels of mouthcare assessment completion and denture documentation across different wards. Recommendations from the evaluation include tailored oral and denture care training for healthcare professionals and exploring the use of dental scanners to store digital records of dentures.
Why It's Important?
The evaluation highlights the critical need for improved oral care practices in hospitals, especially for vulnerable inpatients who are at risk of losing dentures. Denture loss can significantly impact the quality of life and health outcomes for older patients. By implementing the recommended training and technological solutions, healthcare providers can enhance patient care and reduce the incidence of denture loss. This initiative reflects a broader commitment to improving healthcare services and patient safety, which is essential for maintaining trust and efficacy in healthcare systems.
