New research led by University College London (UCL) indicates that persistent financial hardship can accelerate age-related cognitive decline. The study, published in Innovation in Aging, analyzed data from 2,759 individuals in the UK who participated
in the MRC National Survey of Health and Development, a 1946 British cohort study. Researchers found that individuals experiencing ongoing financial difficulties or consistently low income during early and middle adulthood performed worse on cognitive tests by age 53. A subgroup that underwent later brain scans also showed that persistent low income was associated with poorer brain health, including increased brain shrinkage, between ages 69 and 71. These associations remained significant even after accounting for other influencing factors such as childhood cognitive ability, education level, and childhood disadvantage. The study emphasizes that the accumulation of hardship over many years, rather than isolated incidents, is linked to the most severe cognitive health outcomes.
