What's Happening?
The King County Flood Control District has approved approximately $14.3 million in grant funds for 39 projects across King County. These funds, distributed through the Steve Bleifuhs Memorial Flood Reduction Grant Program, are aimed at reducing flood
risks, improving drainage, and restoring waterways in south King County. The program specifically targets medium and small local flood reduction projects. King County Councilmember and Flood Control District Supervisor Steffanie Fain noted that the funding addresses practical issues such as repeatedly flooded roads, undersized culverts, and drainage problems affecting agricultural land. For instance, $1.7 million has been allocated to projects in King County District 5, including $750,000 for the Earthworks Sediment Pond Culvert Replacement project in Kent, $400,000 for the Hardie Avenue SW Flood Risk Reduction project in Renton, and $200,000 for the Des Moines Creek Estuary Restoration Final Design. Additionally, $350,000 will support the Agricultural Drainage Project across the King Conservation District.

Renton will install 600 feet of 48-inch storm drain for the Hardie Avenue SW Flood Risk Reduction project. Des Moines will move forward with the final design for its Creek Estuary Restoration. The King Conservation District will implement the Agricultural Drainage Project to assist farmers. Furthermore, Auburn will receive $300,000 for the Auburn 400 Flood Mitigation Ponds / 15th Street SE Culvert project, and Algona will receive $359,000 for property acquisition to reduce flood risk on 11th Avenue North. These projects are expected to move into various stages of development and implementation, with the goal of enhancing flood protection and environmental health across the region.
