What's Happening?
FiBL and Fairtrade International have initiated a global survey to evaluate the impact of new EU regulations on organic smallholders outside the EU. The survey aims to collect data on the effects of the EU Organic Regulation and the upcoming EU Deforestation
Regulation on organic imports, particularly focusing on cocoa and other smallholder crops. This initiative seeks to gather critical impact and cost data to develop strategies for stabilizing organic supply chains. The project is supported by the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs and aims to provide actionable solutions for smallholders affected by these regulatory changes.
Why It's Important?
The survey is crucial for understanding the real-world implications of EU regulatory changes on organic smallholders globally. By collecting quantitative data on production changes and compliance costs, the survey will inform policy dialogues and support fair pricing discussions. This initiative is vital for ensuring the sustainability of organic supply chains, particularly for smallholder farmers who may face increased costs and challenges due to new compliance requirements. The findings will help stakeholders develop measures to simplify and streamline the implementation of these regulations, potentially influencing future policy decisions and trade agreements.
