What's Happening?
Allegiant Air is set to expand its network by adding Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR) in early 2026, becoming the second airline to do so after Breeze Airways. This move follows Avelo Airlines' decision to withdraw from BUR, which it had previously considered a key part of its network. Allegiant plans to launch two routes from BUR, including flights to Provo, Utah, directly competing with Breeze Airways. Starting February 12, 2026, Allegiant will operate flights between BUR and Bellingham International Airport in Washington state, as well as BUR and Provo Airport. Breeze Airways will follow with its own service to Provo starting March 11, 2026. Avelo Airlines had initially seen BUR as an alternative to Los Angeles International Airport, aiming to attract passengers from smaller West Coast markets seeking affordable flights to Southern California. However, Avelo decided to exit BUR due to insufficient financial returns amid competitive pressures.
Why It's Important?
The expansion of Allegiant Air into Hollywood Burbank Airport signifies a strategic shift in the ultra-low-cost carrier market, potentially increasing competition and offering more options for travelers seeking budget-friendly flights. This development could benefit consumers by providing more choices and potentially lower fares. For Allegiant, entering BUR represents an opportunity to capture market share in Southern California, a region with high demand for air travel. The move also highlights the dynamic nature of the airline industry, where carriers continuously adapt their strategies to optimize routes and maximize profitability. Breeze Airways' decision to compete directly with Allegiant on the Provo route further underscores the competitive landscape, which could lead to aggressive pricing and promotional strategies.
What's Next?
As Allegiant Air and Breeze Airways prepare to launch their services from Hollywood Burbank Airport, travelers can expect increased competition and potentially more competitive pricing on these routes. The success of these new routes will likely depend on passenger demand and the airlines' ability to offer attractive fares and convenient schedules. Other airlines may also consider entering or expanding their presence at BUR, further intensifying competition. Additionally, the performance of these routes could influence future network expansion decisions by Allegiant and Breeze, as they assess the viability of serving smaller markets from BUR.
