NATO is significantly bolstering its space defense capabilities through several new initiatives and increased investments. Eight NATO allies are collaborating on HALO (Hybrid Alliance Layered Operations in Space), a multinational project aimed at integrating
sovereign military satellites into a networked megaconstellation to improve resilience, high-speed communications, intelligence, and missile tracking. Additionally, 17 NATO nations have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen the Alliance Persistent Surveillance from Space (APSS) initiative, which will enhance intelligence sharing by accelerating the processing of data from space-based sensors. These efforts are supported by a substantial increase in defense investments, with European Allies and Canada boosting core defense requirements by over $139 billion in 2025. NATO Communications and Information Agency (NCIA) has also signed contracts for a Protected Business Network (PBN) to establish a secure, cloud-enabled digital infrastructure and a Data-Centric Platform for NATO’s Air Command and Control.
