Stony Brook Medicine is actively engaged in sustainable global health programming, particularly in Mozambique, through its Center for Global Health Equity. The initiative focuses on building capacity for care, education, and research in underserved international
communities. Dr. Sierra Washington, Director of Stony Brook’s Center for Global Health Equity, emphasizes the moral and ethical obligation of premier academic medical centers to address global health inequities. The program aims to create lasting partnerships and sustainable programs rather than short-term medical tourism. Dr. Xun (Julie) Lian, Director of Minimally Invasive and Robotic Gynecologic Surgery, has led efforts to grow laparoscopic surgery capabilities in Maputo, Mozambique, training six surgeons to perform these procedures. This has significantly improved patient recovery times for common gynecological emergencies. Additionally, Dr. Benjamin Fombonne, Division Chief for Global Emergency Medicine, and Dr. Sara Rosenzweig, a Global Emergency Medicine Fellow, have contributed to developing high-quality emergency care, highlighting the shared challenges of strained resources and health inequities across global health systems. Dr. Jonathan B. Oster, Director of Global Anesthesia and Critical Care, is collaborating with engineers to develop a low-cost capnograph, a vital monitor for anesthesia, for use in Mozambique.
