What's Happening?
The Government of Alberta is currently seeking feedback on the potential regulation of agricultural plastics recycling under a provincial framework. This initiative is spearheaded by Alberta Environment and Protected Areas in collaboration with Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation. The consultation aims to address several critical areas, including the types of plastics to be included, defining obligated producers, setting recycling targets, ensuring service standards for collection, and assessing cost impacts. Since 2019, Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation has supported the Alberta Ag-Plastic. Recycle It! pilot program, which focuses on recycling grain bags and twine. The program, operated by Cleanfarms and administered by Alberta Beef Producers, has successfully diverted millions of kilograms of agricultural plastics from landfills. The provincial government has extended the pilot program until December 2025, and is considering whether agricultural plastics should be included under the Extended Producer Responsibility Regulation, which would involve producers in managing recycling efforts.
