What's Happening?
The Cohn family, after losing their 6-year-old son Zachary to a pool drowning in 2007, has become advocates for water safety. Zachary drowned due to a loose drain cover in their backyard pool, which trapped his arm underwater. In response, the family founded
The Zac Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to promoting water safety and preventing similar tragedies. The foundation has provided free water safety camps to over 25,000 children and contributed to the U.S. National Water Safety Action Plan.
Why It's Important?
Drowning is a leading cause of death among young children in the U.S., highlighting the critical need for increased awareness and preventive measures. The Cohn family's advocacy underscores the importance of safety regulations and education in preventing such incidents. Their efforts have not only honored their son's memory but have also contributed to national and local drowning prevention strategies, potentially saving countless lives.
