What's Happening?
Futureproof Cumbria, previously known as Cumbria Action for Sustainability, has been awarded £300,000 by the Westmorland and Furness Council to expand the Zero Carbon Cumbria (ZCC) project. This funding aims to build on a previous £2.5 million grant from
the National Lottery, which has already spurred climate action across various sectors in Cumbria. The ZCC Partnership, involving over 300 individuals from 80 organizations, focuses on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing natural carbon storage. The funding will also support the appointment of Michael Robinson as the new partnership manager, enhancing efforts to influence national climate policy and funding.
Why It's Important?
The allocation of funds to Futureproof Cumbria highlights the importance of local government support in achieving climate goals. By investing in the ZCC project, the council is fostering collaboration among councils, businesses, and communities to address climate change. This initiative not only aims to reduce emissions but also to position Cumbria as a leader in sustainable practices. The project’s success could serve as a model for other regions, demonstrating the effectiveness of coordinated local action in contributing to national and global climate targets.
What's Next?
Futureproof Cumbria will focus on expanding its influence on national climate policy to ensure that Cumbria's unique needs as a rural area are considered in broader decision-making processes. The organization will continue to track progress in emission reductions and carbon storage, supported by the Lake District National Park Authority. As the project evolves, it may attract further investment and partnerships, potentially leading to more comprehensive climate initiatives in the region.
