A new study by Pew Research, released on Thursday, indicates that over one-third of webpages published since the launch of ChatGPT exhibit signs of being written or substantially edited by artificial intelligence. The report analyzed nearly half a million
English-language webpages from the past five years, utilizing Open Pangram's technology to detect AI authorship. While a random sample of all webpages showed about 10% with significant AI authorship, this figure surged to 35% when focusing exclusively on pages published after ChatGPT's November 2022 release. The study also found a significant disparity across domain types, with .com domains showing approximately ten times the rate of AI authorship compared to .edu or .gov domains, and .org domains having a 4.6% rate. This research corroborates earlier findings by internet infrastructure provider Cloudflare, which reported that bot web traffic had surpassed human web traffic sooner than anticipated.
