What's Happening?
UN Women and Viet Nam recently held an inter-agency meeting in Ha Noi to discuss strengthening cooperation on gender equality and women's empowerment. The meeting, chaired by Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Nguyen Thi Ha, included a delegation from UN Women’s
Advisory Committee on Oversight (ACO). Deputy Minister Ha commended UN Women's support in developing and implementing gender equality policies, empowering women, and advancing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Viet Nam. Christine Arab, Regional Director of UN Women for Asia and the Pacific, praised Viet Nam's development trajectory and its contributions to women's empowerment both domestically and internationally. Discussions focused on achievements in gender equality policy, women's leadership, the effectiveness of UN Women's support, priorities for the 2027-2031 Viet Nam-UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework, and enhanced regional and global engagement through multilateral forums.
Why It's Important?
This collaboration is significant as it highlights Viet Nam's commitment to gender equality and women's empowerment, areas crucial for sustainable development. The partnership with UN Women provides Viet Nam with expertise and support to address systemic gender imbalances and promote inclusive leadership. For UN Women, Viet Nam serves as a valuable case study, offering insights into public-private partnerships, private sector engagement, implementation of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), green economy initiatives, climate change response, and gender statistics and budgeting. Sharing Viet Nam's experiences across ASEAN and internationally can provide a model for other nations striving for similar advancements, particularly in integrating women's roles in innovation, digital transformation, and green growth.
What's Next?
The discussions will inform recommendations to UN Women’s Executive Board, aiming to improve the effectiveness of bilateral cooperation. Viet Nam and UN Women will continue to work within the framework of the Viet Nam-UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework for 2027-2031, focusing on identified priorities. There is an expectation for Viet Nam to share its practical experiences more widely across ASEAN and international forums, including the UN Commission on the Status of Women. This ongoing partnership is anticipated to lead to further legislative developments and policy implementations in Viet Nam to address gender-based violence and discrimination, ensuring continued progress towards inclusive and sustainable development.
Beyond the Headlines
The emphasis on integrating gender equality into policymaking and EU fund management processes, as well as a gender analysis of the green economy, points to a broader recognition of women's critical role in emerging sectors. This approach not only addresses social equity but also leverages women's participation for economic growth and environmental sustainability. The focus on comprehensive legislation to combat discrimination and address gender-based violence, including for women and girls with disabilities, underscores a commitment to intersectional feminism and ensuring no group is left behind. This holistic strategy reflects a deeper understanding that gender equality is not merely a social issue but a fundamental component of national development and international cooperation.
