What's Happening?
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has conducted an operational test of facial biometric capture technology for pedestrians exiting the United States at the Progreso International Bridge in Texas. This initiative, driven by Customs and Border Protection
(CBP) and facilitated by the Science and Technology Directorate, aims to confirm the departure of pedestrians at land crossings using biometrics without requiring travelers to stop. Over 1.1 million pedestrians exit to Mexico annually at Progreso. The testing involved mounting cameras along the walkway to capture facial biometrics in various challenging conditions, including different walking paces, hats, sunglasses, umbrellas, and varying light conditions (daylight and after dark). Three solutions from NEC National Security Systems and a joint offering from Paravision and AiFi were deployed for operational data collection. U.S. citizens were provided with an opt-out lane, as the biometric entry and exit mandate applies to non-citizen travelers.
