What's Happening?
Southeast Kansas Inc. (SEK Inc.), an organization established in 1957 to bolster the region's economy, is now prioritizing workforce needs alongside attracting new industries. Don Alexander, the owner of Alexander Manufacturing, has been appointed as the president
of SEK Inc., marking his third term. The organization, originally known as Mid-America, Inc., has evolved from focusing solely on recruiting manufacturers to addressing broader regional needs such as workforce development, career and technical education, housing, childcare, and legislative advocacy. SEK Inc. has been actively hosting housing and childcare conferences and coordinating manufacturing plant tours with educational components. The organization serves as a unifying force for 12 counties, bringing together various stakeholders to work collaboratively on regional issues.
Why It's Important?
The shift in SEK Inc.'s focus reflects broader economic changes in Southeast Kansas, where the competition for skilled workers has intensified. By addressing workforce development and related issues like housing and childcare, SEK Inc. aims to enhance workforce participation and retention, which are critical for sustaining regional economic growth. The organization's efforts to engage with state legislators and coordinate educational initiatives highlight the importance of a collaborative approach to regional development. This strategy not only supports existing industries but also makes the region more attractive to potential new businesses, thereby contributing to long-term economic stability and growth.
What's Next?
SEK Inc. plans to continue its efforts in workforce development and regional advocacy. The organization will likely expand its initiatives to include more comprehensive educational programs and legislative engagement. As the region's economic landscape evolves, SEK Inc. may also explore new partnerships and funding opportunities to support its initiatives. The ongoing focus on housing and childcare suggests that these areas will remain priorities, with potential for further conferences and collaborative projects aimed at addressing these critical needs.
