Researchers have successfully sequenced the genome of the vampire squid, Vampyroteuthis infernalis, revealing that its chromosomes closely resemble those of squids and cuttlefish. This discovery suggests that the vampire squid has undergone minimal evolutionary

The study, published in the journal iScience, utilized a genetic analysis platform called PacBio to sequence the DNA from a sample collected in the West Pacific Ocean. The vampire squid's genome, at 11 billion base pairs, is the largest cephalopod genome sequenced to date. This research provides insights into the evolutionary divergence of octopuses and squids, which occurred approximately 300 million years ago.
