What's Happening?
Bhovani Poudel, a resident of Bagar, Dhawalagiri Rural Municipality-7 in Myagdi, has successfully transitioned from a government job to goat farming, achieving self-reliance. After working for over a decade as a contract helper at the Agriculture Development
Office in Beni, Poudel decided to leave his position following the implementation of federalism. He established the Bagar Agriculture and Livestock Multipurpose Farm, starting with nine goats, which has now expanded to over 60. Poudel earns approximately Rs 5 lakh annually by selling 35 to 40 goats, which supports his family and covers educational expenses for his three children. In addition to goat farming, he also cultivates oranges and vegetables commercially. Poudel has planted 100 orange trees, with 40 already producing fruit, and has expanded his farm with an additional 100 saplings. He practices grazing-based goat farming and has implemented security measures, including raising dogs to protect the goats from wild animals.
Why It's Important?
Poudel's transition from a government job to farming highlights a growing trend of individuals seeking self-reliance through agriculture. This shift is significant as it demonstrates the potential for sustainable livelihoods outside traditional employment sectors. By successfully managing a goat farm and diversifying into other agricultural activities, Poudel not only supports his family but also contributes to the local economy. His story underscores the importance of agriculture in providing economic stability and self-sufficiency, particularly in rural areas. Additionally, Poudel's success may inspire others to explore similar paths, potentially leading to increased agricultural productivity and rural development.
What's Next?
Poudel plans to further expand his farm's infrastructure and operations. He anticipates support from government bodies to aid in this expansion. As he continues to grow his farm, Poudel may explore additional agricultural ventures or enhance his current practices to increase productivity and profitability. His success could attract attention from local authorities and agricultural organizations, potentially leading to collaborations or initiatives aimed at supporting small-scale farmers. Poudel's experience may also encourage policy discussions on providing resources and support for individuals transitioning to agriculture, fostering a more robust agricultural sector.
