What's Happening?
Former transport minister Rotimi Amaechi has called for increased investment in agriculture to ensure food security in Nigeria. During a visit to Maraba Gaate settlement Farm gate in Nasarawa, Amaechi emphasized the need to transition from traditional
farming methods to modern, mechanized agriculture. He highlighted the importance of enhancing food production, reducing reliance on imports, and creating jobs as key benefits of this shift. Amaechi also expressed satisfaction with the current agricultural projects and pledged to invest further, drawing on his experience with the Songhai farms in Rivers State during his tenure as governor.
Why It's Important?
The push for agricultural investment is crucial for Nigeria, a country facing significant food security challenges. By modernizing agriculture, Nigeria can increase its food production capacity, reduce dependency on food imports, and stimulate economic growth. This approach not only addresses food insecurity but also provides employment opportunities, particularly in rural areas. The emphasis on mechanization and technology in farming could lead to more efficient agricultural practices, potentially transforming Nigeria's agricultural sector into a more sustainable and profitable industry.
