What's Happening?
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) recently marked 25 years of operations in Nigeria, celebrating a quarter-century of partnership that has supported millions of people, strengthened national institutions, and helped communities rebuild.
The anniversary event, held in Abuja, was attended by notable figures including Nigeria's Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima, who congratulated IOM on its contributions to supporting displaced communities, protecting vulnerable populations, and promoting safe and regular migration. Dr. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, CEO of the Nigerians in the Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), emphasized the potential of properly channeled migration to contribute significantly to Nigeria's economy. During the event, IOM unveiled 'Migration Vision @25,' a framework developed with the Nigerian government and partners to guide migration cooperation over the next 25 years.
Why It's Important?
IOM's 25-year presence in Nigeria highlights the critical role of international organizations in addressing complex migration challenges and harnessing migration for development. Nigeria, with its large and youthful population, faces significant issues such as conflict, insecurity, climate-related disasters, and economic pressures, which contribute to displacement and increased vulnerabilities. The 'Migration Vision @25' is crucial as it aims to position Nigeria as a leading African hub for safe and productive migration, a globally competitive source of skills and talent, and a country where migration directly contributes to economic growth and national development. This vision emphasizes stronger migrant protection, expanded regular migration pathways, greater diaspora engagement, sustainable reintegration, and lasting solutions for displacement-affected communities, all vital for the country's future stability and prosperity.
What's Next?
The 'Migration Vision @25,' anchored in the pillars of Mobility, Opportunity, and Resilience, will guide IOM's and Nigeria's collaborative efforts for the next quarter-century. This framework will focus on implementing strategies to achieve its goals, including investing in skills development, expanding pathways for safe and regular mobility, and creating opportunities for young people. The vision also calls for enhanced engagement with the Nigerian diaspora, whose skills, investments, and networks are considered invaluable assets. IOM has reaffirmed its commitment to working with the Nigerian government and partners to save lives, strengthen institutions, build resilient communities, and harness migration as a driver of national and regional prosperity, ensuring that the objectives outlined in the vision are pursued over the coming years.
Beyond the Headlines
The celebration and the launch of 'Migration Vision @25' underscore a significant shift in perspective towards migration—from viewing it solely as a challenge to recognizing it as an opportunity for development. This long-term strategic planning, spanning 25 years, reflects a deep commitment to sustainable solutions and a holistic approach to human mobility. It also highlights the importance of strong partnerships between international bodies and national governments in addressing global issues. By focusing on harnessing the potential of its diaspora and creating safe migration pathways, Nigeria is setting a precedent for how African nations can proactively manage and benefit from migration, potentially influencing regional and continental migration policies and fostering greater collaboration across West and Central Africa.
