What's Happening?
Dr. Charles R. Drew Elementary School in Silver Spring, Maryland, has been awarded an NFL PLAY 60 Active Recess Grant by the American Heart Association and the National Football League (NFL). The grant, amounting to $500, is part of a broader initiative
to promote physical activity among children. This funding is part of the second round of grants from a $350,000 annual pool provided by the NFL through its PLAY 60 campaign. The initiative aims to encourage children to engage in at least 60 minutes of physical activity daily, aligning with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. The grant will support the school in enhancing physical activity opportunities, including equipment for physical education, FLAG football, and recess enhancements.
Why It's Important?
The grant is significant as it addresses the growing concern of childhood obesity and inactivity in the United States, where approximately 1 in 5 children are affected. By providing resources to schools, the initiative aims to foster healthier lifestyles among young students, potentially reducing long-term health risks associated with sedentary behavior. The program not only supports physical health but also contributes to improved academic performance and mental well-being. The involvement of NFL mascots as ambassadors further helps in motivating children to participate in physical activities, making exercise a fun and engaging part of their daily routine.
What's Next?
The American Heart Association and NFL will continue to accept grant applications throughout the year, with another group of recipients expected to be announced in June. Schools interested in participating can apply for funding to support their physical activity programs. The ongoing support from the NFL and the American Heart Association is expected to expand the reach of the PLAY 60 initiative, potentially impacting more schools and communities across the nation.
