What's Happening?
Bosnia and Herzegovina is moving forward with the acquisition of six Leonardo AW119 single-engine helicopters for its military. This decision follows a test flight by the country's Minister for Defense, Zukan Helez, during a visit to the U.S. The helicopters,
produced by Leonardo Helicopters in Philadelphia, represent the largest investment in the country's armed forces to date. The acquisition includes pilot training, flight simulators, spare parts, and maintenance equipment, all part of a $100 million U.S. Foreign Military Sales process approved by the State Department in May 2025.
Why It's Important?
The acquisition of new helicopters is a significant step for Bosnia and Herzegovina in modernizing its military capabilities. This investment underscores the country's commitment to strengthening its defense forces and enhancing its operational readiness. The inclusion of pilot training and maintenance support ensures that the military can effectively utilize the new helicopters, potentially improving its strategic capabilities. This move may also influence regional security dynamics, as Bosnia and Herzegovina positions itself as a more capable and modern military force within the Balkans.
