What's Happening?
Lesotho has launched the ChildSafe project, an initiative funded by the United States and implemented by Catholic Relief Services (CRS), aimed at bolstering child protection systems and early childhood development and care services, particularly for vulnerable
children. The project was unveiled in Maseru, with Minister of Education and Training Professor Ntoi Rapapa highlighting its significance in addressing Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD), an area that traditionally receives less investment compared to other educational levels. Professor Rapapa expressed gratitude to the U.S. Department of State, CRS, and other partners for selecting Lesotho to benefit from this multi-country initiative. The collaboration between the Ministry of Education and Training and CRS has already supported the development of daycare center guidelines, capacity-building for ECCD practitioners, and the creation of safe, nurturing, and inclusive learning environments for children.
Why It's Important?
The ChildSafe project is critical for Lesotho's future, as the well-being of its children directly impacts the nation's future workforce, institutions, wealth, and leadership. By focusing on early childhood health and development, the initiative lays a strong foundation for lifelong learning and improves the overall safety and well-being of vulnerable children and families. The project also emphasizes strengthening childcare systems and building the capacity of daycare workers, which is essential for providing quality care. The U.S. Embassy in Lesotho Chargé d’Affaires Mr. Thomas Hines noted that ChildSafe represents a new chapter in cooperation between the United States and Lesotho, building on existing partnerships in sectors such as health. This initiative underscores the U.S. commitment to global health security and diplomacy by investing in programs that measurably and durably improve child safety and development.
What's Next?
The ChildSafe project will continue to focus on strengthening services and systems that can be sustained beyond its initial implementation phase. Stakeholders are encouraged to openly discuss and refine the project’s priorities to ensure the resulting work plan accurately reflects Lesotho’s specific needs. The two-day engagement following the launch will review the ChildSafe global program, its theory of change, and work plan, fostering collective action and accountability among all involved parties. The project will be implemented in partnership with the Government of Lesotho, particularly the Ministry of Education and Training. Future efforts will also include strengthening supervision and support for caregivers, including those without formal qualifications, and coordinating early childhood development services across education, health, nutrition, family support, and child protection sectors to ensure a holistic approach.
