A team led by Brian Walsh from Boston University has proposed an innovative method to protect Earth from the effects of severe solar storms. The concept, known as StormWall, involves deploying a fleet of spacecraft into geosynchronous orbit. These spacecraft would
release a 'mass-loading material' such as barium, lithium, sodium, or calcium, which can be vaporized to form a cloud of electrically charged plasma. This artificial plasma would enhance Earth's magnetosphere, the planet's natural defense against solar storms, by thickening the boundary between Earth and incoming solar winds. The proposal aims to reduce the intensity of geomagnetic storms by more than half, thereby safeguarding satellites, global communications, GPS systems, and electrical grids from potential disruptions.
