A study conducted by the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam has found that the muscles of individuals with long COVID and ME/CVS differ significantly from those of healthy individuals who are inactive. The research indicates that the muscle damage in these
patients is not solely due to inactivity. The study compared muscle changes in patients with those in healthy individuals who underwent 60 days of bed rest. The findings showed that the muscles of patients with long COVID or ME/CVS were less red and had poorly functioning mitochondria, which are crucial for endurance. This suggests that the muscle changes are not just a result of inactivity but may be linked to the conditions themselves.
