A study has found that industrial chicken farming is accelerating the spread of Campylobacter, the world's most common bacterial cause of diarrhoea. The research highlights a significant increase in the exchange of Campylobacter strains between wild birds
and chickens due to intensified farming practices. This has created ideal conditions for the bacteria to evolve, leading to increased antimicrobial resistance traits. The study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, analyzed nearly 2,800 bacterial genomes from chickens and wild birds across 30 countries. The findings suggest that the unprecedented scale of chicken production is fueling the evolution of these bacteria, posing new health risks.
