What's Happening?
A new Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the UK and Switzerland has been announced, which is expected to significantly boost UK services exports by an estimated £5.2 billion annually. The agreement includes provisions for visa-free travel for UK services professionals
to Switzerland for up to 90 days a year. Additionally, UK businesses can transfer employees to Switzerland for up to five years without stringent economic needs tests, easing the process of obtaining Swiss work permits for UK graduates in sectors such as finance, insurance, and consultancy. The agreement also plans to introduce surcharge-free international mobile roaming, allowing tourists and business people to use their phones in Switzerland without extra charges.
Why It's Important?
This agreement is crucial as it strengthens the economic ties between the UK and Switzerland, which is the UK's sixth-largest services export market. By facilitating easier movement and reducing barriers, the FTA supports the UK's service sector, which constitutes a significant portion of its economic output and employment. The deal is expected to enhance the competitiveness of UK businesses in Switzerland, providing them with a stable and predictable trading environment. This is particularly beneficial for sectors that rely heavily on international mobility and communication, such as finance and consultancy.
