What's Happening?
Jeju Island is actively campaigning to host the 2028 Group of 20 (G20) Summit, with local residents and those living abroad rallying support for its bid. The Busan Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Residents’ Association, comprising Jeju natives residing
in Busan, held a rally to endorse Jeju's candidacy during their 80th-anniversary family festival. Approximately 1,500 attendees, including Governor Wi Seong-gon of Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, expressed their commitment to promoting Jeju's capabilities as a summit host. This show of support is notable as Busan Metropolitan City is also a contender for hosting the summit. South Korea is slated to hold the G20 presidency in 2028, marking the first time the summit will be held in the country since 2010.
Why It's Important?
The competition among South Korean cities to host the 2028 G20 Summit carries significant implications for regional development and national prestige. Hosting such a high-profile international event would bring substantial economic benefits, including increased tourism, infrastructure development, and global recognition for the chosen city. For Jeju Island, securing the G20 Summit would solidify its status as a major international convention destination, leveraging its existing facilities like the International Convention Center Jeju and the Jungmun Tourist Complex. The involvement of overseas residents in the bidding process highlights the deep-seated community pride and the potential for broad-based national support, which could be a decisive factor in the selection process. The U.S., as a key G20 member, would participate in a summit hosted by South Korea, making the host city selection relevant to its diplomatic and economic engagements in the region.
What's Next?
South Korea is in the process of selecting a domestic host city for the 2028 G20 Summit, with Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, Busan Metropolitan City, Incheon Metropolitan City, Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City, and Gyeongsangbuk-do all expressing interest. Jeju Province has launched a 'National Promotion Committee for Jeju’s Hosting of the 2028 G20 Summit' and is actively highlighting its meeting and accommodation facilities, experience in hosting international conferences, and geographic security. The support from Jeju natives in Busan indicates a growing momentum for Jeju's bid. The final decision on the host city will determine where the G20 leaders, including those from the U.S., will convene in 2028, impacting local economies and international relations.
Beyond the Headlines
The intense competition to host the G20 Summit reflects a broader trend among cities and regions globally to enhance their international profile and attract foreign investment. Beyond the immediate economic benefits, hosting such an event can foster a sense of national unity and pride, as seen with the rallies of Jeju natives. It also underscores the strategic importance of international diplomacy and the role of host cities in shaping global narratives. The selection process itself can become a platform for showcasing a region's unique cultural heritage and environmental commitments, as Jeju emphasizes its island status and tourism appeal. This competition highlights how global events can drive local development and influence national identity on the international stage.
