What's Happening?
Pakistan has initiated its last nationwide anti-polio vaccination drive of 2025, targeting 45 million children following a surge in polio cases. The campaign comes after 30 new cases were reported this year, a decrease from 74 cases in the same period
last year. Despite security threats, over 400,000 health workers are conducting door-to-door vaccinations across various regions, including Balochistan, Sindh, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The campaign is synchronized with Afghanistan to enhance immunity and prevent cross-border transmission. Health Minister Mustafa Kamal emphasized the importance of the campaign for children's futures and community safety.
Why It's Important?
This vaccination drive is crucial in Pakistan's ongoing efforts to eradicate polio, a disease that remains endemic only in Pakistan and Afghanistan. The campaign's success could significantly impact global health, as eradicating polio in these regions would mark a major milestone in public health. The initiative also highlights the challenges faced by health workers, who operate under threats from militants opposing vaccination efforts. The campaign's success could bolster international confidence in Pakistan's public health initiatives and contribute to global eradication efforts.
