What's Happening?
Aurora's Public Art Division has launched 'The Unbroken Thread: Native and Indigenous Art,' an exhibit celebrating Native and Indigenous artists alongside local Aurora artists inspired by Native heritage.
The exhibit features works from artists such as Sharon Hoogstraten, Robert Wahapi, and others. Curator Sangeeta Pande expressed her passion for native art and the honor of showcasing this collection. The exhibit opened with a reception featuring poetry, Native American music, and percussion performances. Additional events are planned, including a storytelling session and a Native drum circle ceremony.
Why It's Important?
The exhibit highlights the cultural significance and contributions of Native and Indigenous artists, fostering appreciation and understanding of their heritage. It serves as a platform for these artists to share their stories and experiences, enriching the community's cultural landscape. By celebrating Native American Heritage Month, the exhibit promotes cultural diversity and inclusion, offering educational opportunities for the public to engage with and learn from these artists.
What's Next?
The exhibit will continue to host events celebrating Native American Heritage Month, including a storytelling session and a book reading by Maria Desjarlait. These events aim to deepen the community's engagement with Native culture and provide further opportunities for learning and appreciation. The exhibit is open to the public at Aurora Public Art, with specific visiting hours throughout the week.
