What's Happening?
The Arizona Department of Transportation (DOT) has selected Jacobs and Sundt for a $600 million highway project aimed at modernizing a three-mile stretch of Interstate 10 in Tucson. The project, which
is part of Arizona DOT's I-10 and State Route 210 Transportation Design Concept Report, involves the construction of three general-purpose lanes in each direction and the removal of existing interchanges to alleviate congestion. Jacobs will handle the final design and engineering documents, while Sundt will collaborate as the design-build partner. The project is fully funded and is expected to be completed by summer 2028.
Why It's Important?
This project is significant as it represents a major infrastructure investment in southern Arizona, aimed at improving transportation efficiency and safety. By modernizing a key transportation corridor, the project is expected to ease traffic congestion, enhance connectivity, and support economic growth in the region. The collaboration between Jacobs and Sundt brings best practices in alternative program delivery, potentially setting a precedent for future infrastructure projects in Arizona.
What's Next?
Construction is underway, and the project is expected to progress without delays despite the federal government shutdown. The completion of this project will likely lead to improved traffic flow and reduced travel times for commuters and commercial vehicles, contributing to the overall economic development of Tucson and surrounding areas.
