NASA has announced the integration of SpaceX's Starlink laser communication technology into the Artemis III mission, scheduled for 2027. This mission aims to deliver high-definition 4K imagery and video from the Orion spacecraft to Earth. The integration involves
mounting two Starlink mini laser terminals on Orion's exterior, which will enhance the spacecraft's existing communication systems. These terminals utilize the same crosslink technology developed for SpaceX's Starlink constellation, allowing for efficient data transmission to NASA's Mission Control Center. The Artemis III mission is a critical step in NASA's plan to return humans to the lunar surface by 2028, as it involves testing rendezvous and docking operations with commercial human landing systems.
