What's Happening?
The General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) has announced that starting January 7, 2026, pharmacists in Great Britain will be able to authorize pharmacy technicians to handle checked and bagged prescriptions. This change is part of the Human Medicines (Authorisation
by Pharmacists and Supervision by Pharmacy Technicians) Order 2025, which has been approved by Parliament and the Privy Council. The legislation aims to expand the roles of pharmacy technicians, allowing them to take on more responsibilities in the preparation, assembly, dispensing, and sale of medicines. This move is intended to enable pharmacists to focus more on patient-facing clinical services. The changes follow a consultation by the Department of Health and Social Care and are part of broader efforts to modernize pharmaceutical care.
Why It's Important?
This legislative change is significant for the pharmaceutical industry as it aims to optimize the workforce by allowing pharmacy technicians to take on more responsibilities. This could lead to increased efficiency in pharmacies, allowing pharmacists to dedicate more time to direct patient care. The move is expected to enhance the delivery of pharmaceutical services and improve patient outcomes. It also reflects a shift towards utilizing the full potential of pharmacy technicians, which could lead to cost savings and better resource allocation within the healthcare system.
What's Next?
The GPhC will soon begin a public consultation on draft standards for Superintendent Pharmacists and Responsible Pharmacists to support the implementation of the new legislation. These standards will clarify the roles and responsibilities of pharmacists and technicians, ensuring safe and effective changes. The full implementation of the legislation is expected by December 2026, with ongoing development of professional standards and guidance to support the transition.
