Construction is set to begin this week on a new security fence at the San Diego Police Department's (SDPD) Headquarters in Downtown San Diego. This project follows several years of planning and aims to enhance security measures at the facility. The SDPD Headquarters has
reportedly experienced frequent incidents of vandalism, disturbances, trespassing, and a recent assault on an employee in the parking lot. The new fence is intended to align the headquarters' security with that of other SDPD facilities and protect critical public safety operations housed within the building. The design includes high-security fencing, eight to ten feet tall, that will encircle the building. Public access to the grass and public spaces along Broadway will be maintained through outer gates that will remain open 24/7 but can be closed if security needs arise. The main Broadway entrance will also stay open to the public during business hours, while employee-only zones, the E Street walkway, and the main parking lot will transition to secure key-card access.

The outer gates allowing public entry to the grass and public spaces along Broadway will remain open unless specific security needs necessitate their closure. The project, which has been discussed since approximately 2018 and was requested as a Capital Improvement Program Project, has a total anticipated cost of $3.01 million, covering design, materials, permits, and construction. The completion of this project will mark a significant upgrade in the physical security posture of the San Diego Police Department's main facility.
