What's Happening?
The Ministry of Agriculture, Waterways and Sugar Industry is intensifying efforts to bolster food security on the island of Kadavu. The ministry's officers are implementing initiatives to boost local food production and promote sustainable farming practices.
Key activities include expanding the School Garden Programme at Richmond Methodist High School and Tiliva District School, which involves building nurseries and box farms to teach students farming skills and encourage healthy eating. Additionally, in Muani, officers are mapping logged forest areas to identify degraded land for rehabilitation, aiming to restore soil health and improve productivity. An agro-ecology demonstration site is also being established in Solovola, Ravitaki to promote environmentally friendly farming practices.
Why It's Important?
These initiatives are vital for enhancing food security in Kadavu, reducing the island's reliance on imported food, and promoting self-sufficiency. By teaching students farming skills and promoting sustainable practices, the ministry is fostering a culture of resilience and environmental stewardship. The rehabilitation of degraded lands and the establishment of agro-ecology sites are expected to improve long-term agricultural productivity and environmental health. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to build resilient farming systems that can withstand environmental and economic challenges.
