What's Happening?
The College of the Siskiyous has launched a new associate of arts degree in communication studies with a focus on social media. Starting in spring 2026, the program will offer courses in podcasting, live streaming, social media strategy, and ethical digital
storytelling. These skills are increasingly important for careers, community engagement, and academic transfer. The program includes hands-on learning opportunities using the college's podcasting studio and industry-relevant tools. The degree is transferable to California State University and University of California systems, providing a flexible option for students.
Why It's Important?
The introduction of a social media-focused degree program reflects the growing importance of digital communication skills in today's job market. As social media and digital broadcasting become mainstream, educational institutions are adapting their curricula to prepare students for these evolving fields. This program offers rural communities opportunities to connect and engage on a broader scale, breaking down traditional media barriers. By equipping students with practical skills and industry knowledge, the College of the Siskiyous is helping to meet the demand for skilled professionals in digital media.
